April showers bring May flowers…and our final day of celebration!

April showers bring May flowers…and our final day of celebration!

As they say, “April Showers bring May flowers…”…  so in honour of our month of long awaited Spring weather, let’s experiment and play with some water today!

0SCT ACope

For today’s card, I used the following supplies:

  • Watercolour paper
  • Water brush or paint brush
  • Water ~ Water bottle/Mister
  • Stamps
  • Water- based inks (Ranger Distress Inks)
  • Papertowel

Today I’m going to share a simple technique featuring the use of ink and water.  Let’s start off with some experimenting.  I just adore this beautiful Stampin’ Up! Collection called Stippled Blossoms.  It has been sitting on my desk for a few weeks, untouched (oh my!) so it’s been calling my name to be inked up!

Every watercolour paper is slightly different so this is where you get to experiment.  If you have a few different kinds of watercolour paper at your disposal, test them all.  You know… get inky!  Experiment… dabble… get wet!!  LOL!

Here’s a little bit of watercolour paper education for you:

Watercolor paper comes in three grades; rough, cold pressed and hot pressed

Rough, as you would expect, has a very textured, pebbly surface or has lots of “tooth”.   Water tends to collect in the valleys of the rough texture of this paper.

Hot press (HP), is very smooth and has almost “no tooth” or texture to it.  It is used for creating things with fine lines because it’s so smooth.

Cold press, also called NOT, is a paper somewhere in between the textures of rough and hot press.  This is the most common type of watercolor paper.

Watercolour paper comes in many different weights, for example: “140 pound” or “40lb”.  Watercolour paper is measured by the weight of 500 sheets of paper at Imperial size (20”x30”). The basic premise is, the bigger the number, the thicker the paper.  So a 90lb paper is flimsy, a 140lb paper would be of a medium thickness and a 300lb paper would be as thick as cardboard!

I began by cutting a few sheets of my watercolour papers into some testing scraps to test.  Let the experimentation begin!

  1SCT ACope

Piece A:  For this piece, I spritzed my paper with lots of water, let it sit for about 20 seconds and then I stamped my two step image.

Piece B:  For this piece, I spritzed my paper with a tiny bit of water, let it sit for about 20 seconds then I wiped the excess water from the top of the paper and then I stamped my images and then sprayed my paper again to get the inks to run and spread.

Piece C:  For this piece, I pre-wet my paper with my paint brush, let it soak for 10 seconds and then stamped my images and then spritzed my paper with water again.

Piece D:  For this piece, I pre-wet my paper with my brush (just a quick swipe of water!), let it soak for 5 seconds and then stamped my images, spritzed it with a little bit of water, let it sit for 5-7 seconds and then I dabbed off the excess water.  This by far, was more of the effect that I was looking for, for my card!

So to begin my card panel, I pre-wet my paper with my paint brush, let it sit for 10 seconds and then stamped my images…

2SCT ACope

Then I took the panel and spritzed it with my water bottle, let it sit for 5-7 seconds and the dabbed off the excess water gently with a paper towel and stamped my flowersl…

3SCT ACopeey

To get a multi-coloured bloom, I used two or three different colours of ink applied to the stamp surface at the same time.  Always start applying multiple coloured inks from lightest to darkest so you don’t get a darker coloured ink on your ink pad surface!  You can also try applying  water colour markers and achieve the same effect!

Here is what I created with my final watercolour panel…

Supplies:  Watercolour Paper:  Ranger;  Stamps:  Stampin’ Up!;  Cardstock:  Bazzill;  Gold Pen:  Sakura;  Inks: Ranger Distress Inks, Versamark;  Embossing Powder: misc.

To finish off my card front, I trimmed it slightly, pierced the edges with a pin and also added some gold pen around the edges to match my gold embossed sentiment form the Stampin’ Up! Collection, “ Simply Sketched”.

Thanks for joining me today!  I hope that you too will pick up some inks and experiment with some stamps and water sometime soon!
