Hello SCT friends! It’s Marcia Dehn-Nix here, and I am so excited to be guest designing for SCT Magazine today! It’s Challenge Week here on the SCT blog and today I have a spring color challenge for you. Take a look at this gorgeous color prompt:

I immediately saw a huge sun on my layout with the yellow and varying shades of orange. I was also inspired by that beautiful purple coneflower and wanted to include lots of flowers. Can you tell I am suffering from spring fever!? I found a photo to scrap of my girls after they had picked all the flowers from my flower bed. It was hard to be angry with them when they were so cute and presented most of the flowers to me. Here is my layout created based on the prompt:

Supplies | Patterned paper, stickers:  Pink Paislee Bloom Street collection (blue floral), Pink Paislee Truly Grateful collection (green); cardstock: Bazzill Double Thick White, American Crafts (blue); die cut ephemera:  Pink Paislee Bloom Street collection (butterfly), Pink Paislee Truly Grateful (Start With A Grateful Heart), Shimelle Never Grow Up (flowers); puffy stickers: Pink Paislee Truly Grateful; mixed media: Vicki Boutin Art Crayons (warm); cut file: Jillibean Soup Starburst Design Id #32067, JustNick Studios Stems; bow: Amy Tangerine Hustle & Heart; Other: sewing machine, thread, Silhouette Cameo, quick dry glue, paint brush

I started my layout by cutting out a sunburst template from paper with my Silhouette Cameo that I could use as a stencil. After taping the template to my background paper I was ready to add some color. I selected three Vicki Boutin Art Crayons; yellow, light orange, and dark orange. On an acrylic block, I scribbled some color and then added some water and blended it all together with a paintbrush to create a watercolor. I painted this on my background starting with the outer yellow, then blending and adding the lighter orange closer to the sun. In the middle of the sunburst, I painted on the darker orange. I love the ombre effect.

To get more of the darker orange, I machine stitched around the sun rays with orange thread. I went looking through my Thickers to see if I had any orange ones and found the Rise & Shine in a package of Pink Paislee Truly Grateful Thickers. It’s the perfect title for my sunny layout!

A Spring layout also needs lots of flowers. These  Shimelle Never Grow Up floral die cut ephemera pieces were the perfect colors to match the color scheme. I also added a few stickers from the Pink Paislee Bloom Street collection like this ladybug and heart.

More flowers adorn the right side of my layout along with a Pink Paislee Truly Grateful die cut ephemera piece (in the perfect colors!) that reads “Start With A Grateful Heart”.

Thank you so much for having me as your guest today! I hope I have inspired you to try this spring color challenge. What will these colors inspire you to create?

Let me introduce myself! I live in Minnesota (USA) with my husband. We have 3 children all adults now, 2 dogs, and 3 cats (as I am a stray magnet it seems plus a foster failure). By day I am a software engineer. At night I relax by playing with pretty papers. I have been scrapbooking for about 20 years and currently design for Pebbles, Jillibean Soup, and PageMaps! My scrapbook style is eclectic, but most of my layouts are made with digital cut files and layers of pattern papers and ephemera.
