Hi there! This is Karen, from Close To My Heart, and I’m back this month to share a little more creative inspiration to shake up your creativity! Today, we’ll be focusing on a project that’s taken the crafting world by storm—shaker cards! This sequin technique is a great way to add some extra sparkle (literally!) to any card and can even be used in scrapbook layouts!

To get started, you’ll need to break out the scissors and cut a few pieces of your favorite patterned paper. To create the card shown here, you’ll need:

1 – 3″ white circle

1 – 3″ die cut circle (we used a Close To My Heart Stitched Circle Thin Cut metal die)

1 – 4″ x 2¼” piece

1 – 4″ x 3″ piece (preferably a different pattern than the first one) :)

1 – 4″ x ½” piece (you’ll get to use three of your favorites in this project!)

You’ll also need a plain white card for your base; for this project, we used a 4¼” × 5½” card.

Once you’ve got your paper cut, you’ll need some sparkly sequins, a 3″ acetate circle, and some 3-D foam tape. The foam tape and acetate circle can be purchased separately, or you can find them in a handy kit made specifically for shaker cards on the Close To My Heart website!

Now that you have your pieces cut and your materials gathered, you can begin constructing your card! First, take your 4″ x 2¼” piece of patterned paper and attach it to your plain card with your adhesive of choice, centering it at the top. Because the card itself is a tad larger than the patterned pieces, you should leave a tiny bit of white space at the top, bottom, and sides.

Next, you’ll attach the 4″ x ½” piece right underneath the 4″ x 2¼” piece. Attach the 4″ x 3″ piece underneath the 4″ x ½” piece.

Now it’s time for a little stamping! Using your favorite color, stamp your sentiment in the center of your 3″ white circle and allow time for the ink to dry.  Once your ink has dried, you’ll want to take some precautions against static.

Gently take an anti-static tool or a dryer sheet and rub the surface of the paper in gentle, circular motions. Do the same to your acetate circle. This will help the sequins to move freely in your shaker window. (Make sure to be gentle, or you might smudge your ink!)

Once you’ve stamped and static-proofed your 3″ circle, attach it over the patterned pieces on your card. Then, take your foam tape and place it carefully along the edges of the circle. If you’re using individual pieces of tape, try to place them as close together as possible to keep the sequins inside. Now it’s time to add the magic!

Gently sprinkle a few sequins onto the center of the 3″ circle, inside the foam tape. Carefully place your acetate circle over the foam tape and press down firmly to attach it.

To finish it off, take your 3″ die cut circle and attach it to the acetate circle so the foam tape is no longer visible. You can also attach any additional complements you’d like, and voila! Your shaker card is complete!
