Happy Wednesday dear SCT friends! Only two more days until the Spring issue goes live! You're going to love it! It's packed full of inspiration from all sorts of designers, but this month, I was especially drawn to the layouts by Cathy Zielske and Ali Edwards! Both of these ladies have elegantly simple design sense.

My roots are simple. My style has evolved in the ten years I've been creating, and now I add a lot more STUFF to my designs typically, but I will always love a beautifully designed simple layout, telling a story in words and pictures. I've taken tips from both designers in the issue and incorporated them into my page today. I can't tell you what they are, since that would be revealing too much too soon. But may a rainbow end in your backyard if you can figure out what they are when you get your issue! ;)

I can, however, share a technique with you for adding a bit more color to your designs. This works with any style. Usually I'll just stack a few blocks of colored paper behind the main photo to incorporate color, but that wasn't in keeping with my simple design. So I fussy cut out the background–also known as silhouetting–and backed the photo with a piece of patterned paper instead. I stitched it down, but you can easily just glue and trim the photo.

TIP: To silhouette photos effectively, make sure the subject is filling most of the photo so there's something to anchor it to the edges of the frame. I always print my photos with a border so I have an automatic frame.

I wanted to keep my design simple, and this way, I was able to have both simplicity and just the amount of color I wanted.

We can't wait to reveal the new spring issue…and we can't wait to get our 9th birthday celebration started on Saturday!  Be sure to join the SCT team for 9 days of fun!
