"Hello SCT fans! I’m happy to be here with my first blog post to share with you. I thought we’d start the day with a little punch of color. Adding a wash of watercolor is easier than it looks and a fun way to add some mixed media to your projects.

Supplies: Cardstock: Coordinations; Patterned paper: American Crafts, Crate Paper; Watercolor die cuts: American Crafts; Puffy sticker: American Crafts. Wood Sequins: Freckled Fawn; Button, ribbon flag and tag die cuts: Crate Paper; Label sticker: Pink Paislee. Date and sentiment stamps: American Crafts.Mini stapler: American Crafts. Sewing machine: Janome. Watercolors: ArtBin.
Using products that are specifically designed for watercolors makes it a much easier process for a beginner (or a dabbler like me!). These die cut words from American Crafts have been cut from heavy watercolor paper. This means they absorb the moisture from the paint without warping or falling apart. The watercolor paint also blends nicely on this medium.
To achieve an ombre effect, start by applying a light coat to the entire word. Then go over the bottom portion of the word 2-3 times with more paint until you have a much darker shade. Add 1-2 additional strokes to the center to achieve a hue that is in between.
To create a ‘highlight’ effect of each laser cut word, decide where on the page you’d like to place them. Then, light swipe a few strokes of watercolor paint on white cardstock. Use as little water as possible. Remember this is not watercolor paper and will not absorb moisture easily. If the cardstock warps, place a heavy object on top overnight to straighten.
Once all of the pieces have dried completely, assemble the die cut words over the swatches of coordinating watercolors and sew in place.
It’s as easy as that. Adding touches of watercolor to your layouts is a fun way to get in touch with your artsy side!"
