Getting to the Heart of the Art with Megan..and official kick off to NSD!

Getting to the Heart of the Art with Megan..and official kick off to NSD!

Hello and happy Nat’l Scrapbooking Day! Megan here. It’s an absolute pleasure being here, celebrating with you today.  To kick this day o’ awesome off, I want to ask you a question.

What is at the heart of your art?

In other words, why is it you do the things you do? Is it because you’re your family’s historian, and therefore you feel obligated to document your comings and goings? Is it because you’re seeking a creative outlet and found paper to be a nice fit?

When thinking about how to best get today’s festivities underway, I started thinking about this question for myself. Why do I love scrapbooking? What is it I want to celebrate?

Sure, I love the pretty paper, the trends, and the techniques. If you follow my Monday with Megan posts, you know that to be very true. I’m 100% motivated to create by product lines that inspire me. I’m 100% interested in learning as much as I can about this hobby of ours as I do my best to enhance and grow my scrapping. I’m 100% excited to play and be creative.

But these aren’t the reasons I LOVE scrapbooking. They’re the awesome side effects, sure, but they’re not what got me hooked. You know what did? Seeing my first finished page. Well, my first grown-up finished page, that is. (I’ve been scrapping since I was just a kiddo, as this collage illustrates.

Fast forward to my adult days, when I made this scrapbook page.

I adore this layout. As soon as I completed it, I couldn’t take my eyes off it. Sure, the design is nothing spectacular. The products are cute enough, but it’s not like they’re flashing neon signs or little dancing unicorns popping off the page. They’re just your basics. So what’s with my crush?

It’s the story — the heart of my art — that had me hooked.

At the time I created this layout, I was missing my grandma something fierce. I would hold onto her apron and just breathe it in. (It still smells like her, which I love.) So I decided to document that feeling. That longing. When I was through with the page, I felt a sense of healing. I felt like it was okay to start letting her go, because I will never have to let go of my memories of her. I had my scrapbook to keep them in tact, long after I’m gone and my own grandchildren are clinging to my scrap aprons.

The idea that our stories are being told and live on through our albums is a beautiful thing. A powerful thing. Something to celebrate. This, for me, is what Nat’l Scrapbooking Day is all about!

As you go about your festivities today, I encourage you to pause for a moment and think about what it is you love about scrapbooking. What is at the heart of your art? If you feel like opening up and sharing, I’d love to read your story in the comments of this post. Or you can just keep that feeling inside and enjoy the feeling that comes from reconnecting with that initial motivator that brought you and your scrapbooking to where you are today.

Time to Create

I thought today would be a prime time to tell the story of your art in a layout about YOU. A novel concept, I know. Scrapbooking about yourself when there’s an entire family of people ahead of you in line? Yes! Absolutely! You’re just as special as they are, and I promise you they will want pages about you in their albums more than pages about themselves. If I had scrapbook pages to cling to instead of my grandma’s tattered apron, I’d know so much more about her. About the woman she was before my mama was even a glimmer in her pretty eye. What a gift that would be! So, if for no other reason, do this for the ones you love and stretch yourself to make a YOU page, describing the heart of your art—the reasons you love being the brilliant story teller you are. The reason you fell in love with scrapbooking.

 Submit Your Story

Scrapbook & Cards Today would love to see your Heart of the Art pages if you have time to create them sometime this weekend. Simply submit your page to between now and Sunday, May 4 at 9:00 PM (eastern) and we’ll select a few to feature here on the blog as part of my Monday with Megan post. (Please include a link to your blog or gallery if you have one. Thanks!)

 The Heart of My Art

I always enjoy seeing your work, and sharing it is the cherry on top, so I hope you’ll submit. In the meantime, I thought I’d share my own page with you here. You can find pictures detailing how it all came together on my blog (I’m not typically a mixed media gal, so this was a fun challenge for me), as well as a little giveaway in honor of Nat’l Scrapbooking Day. Hooray!I

What’s Up!

Now, onto what you can expect throughout the day as we celebrate Nat’l Scrapbooking Day.

  1. Hourly Giveaways! Yes, you read that right; there are prizes every single hour to be had, so check back often.
  2. Hourly Posts! The talented SCT design team along with some guests will be here all day, rotating through with unique scrapbook-related posts. Woot!

This is our day, scrapbookers! Let’s enjoy it. (Card makers, we’ll be sure to celebrate that wonderful hobby come World Card Making Day in Oct. In the meantime, maybe you’ll be inspired to give scrapbooking a try today. Seems like a prime time to start to me.)

So, enjoy YOUR day, my friends. And, please, take a moment to reflect on what’s at the heart of your art. I think you’ll find a new sense of devotion and inspiration as you do.

In the spirit of celebrating the heart of our art, I took to my Facebook page to ask my friends what it is they love about scrapbooking and what got them started. I’ll leave you with a few of their comments.

  39. Patricia Pent May 3, 2014 at 8:44 am

So exciting! I’ve been looking forward to this day, just connecting with others that have the same interests.
I scrap ever since I can remember, but when I discover this beautiful way to scrap I decited to organize the pictures and leave the story of our heritage to our children, grandchildren and so on. So a few years back I went to my moms house and asked her for her photo albums and went through them and took pictures to help tell the story, collected pictures of grandparents, aunts, uncles and so on. Went even further and started doing research with family members and I was able to acquired photos and information of my ancestors dating back to the 1700’s, it was so exciting putting this together, my mom and others members got into it also, a couple of family members actually traveled to Italy to check in the archives to find out that our great, great, great grandfather was a hero a a very important person there, his son who traveled to Peru during the war was also a hero and so on…. as you can see really excited of this, and all this started because I went to a scrapbooking party. Being loving it ever since.
Thank you for the opportunity to win and all the creativity I learn from your magazines and everywhere.

Thank you for sharing THE HEART OF YOUR ART Megan!!!
It was interesting to read what your FB friends had to share too. I try to scrap about moments that are precious to me and what I want to remember, not just the big events, I’m talking everyday moments. The older I get, the more I forget and I don’t want to lose those memories. AND the more I realise how precious time is, we lost Grandpa just after Christmas last year, we don’t get second chances, so say the things to you want to say and ask the questions you want to ask NOW and document them in some way while you can.
THANK YOU for kicking of NSD in such a THOUGHTFUL way and for giving us a chance to win some CRAFTY AWESOMENESS too 🙂

  105. Michelle Liimatainen May 3, 2014 at 10:18 am

Hi Megan, I started scrapbooking 15 yrs ago because I like what my sister was doing. I thought it looked fun to capture my little ones. I really didn’t understand the meaning of scrapbooking until a few years later. I created this page: It’s for my grandmother. I missed her so much one day. When I was done I realized that I need to scrapbook to tell my kids exactly what I am feeling, right then…in the moment. My scrapbook style changed after this. It wasn’t about documenting a trip to the park or a birthday…it’s about telling them how I feel, the raw, honest truth. So they can know the real me, how I think, how I feel and how I love. It has made such a difference in me. I love writing down the memories, the emotions, the true feelings. It’s my therapy. When I am long gone my children will be able to know how I loved them without a shadow of a doubt.
The pretty paper and embellishments are just a huge addictive bonus in the process. <3 Happy NSD and thank you for the chance at a FAB give-a-way.

  106. Rhonda Lamourie May 3, 2014 at 10:27 am

Happy NSD one and all. Isn’t it wonderful that there are so many of us wanting to preserve our family stories. My son is my inspiration for everything I do scrapbooking.

  107. Kathleen Spaeth May 3, 2014 at 10:27 am

Megan what a lovely article and a great way to kick off NSD! You beautifully created a scrap book page that will always help you remember your Gram’s. It is a blessing that you were able to save her Apron and turn that into a most touching way to tell everyone about how much you Loved her! The way that everyone expresses how they feel about their Families, Friends, and Everyday Events, always impresses me and attracts me to the act of scrap booking. I will admit that I am more of a card maker, since scrapping in the size of 12 x 12 scares me. But, I do scrap in 6 x 6 form and I am constantly making a Scrap Memory Book (as a Gift or as a way to acknowledge an Achievement). I Love reading, looking at, and following along with NSD. I seem to always pick up some hints, ideas, and techniques to use in my card making. It is so lovely how there are so many of us, who get together and share, and we all have different styles. Enjoy your day! I happen to be a huge fan of Lawn Fawn and I have both of those Stamp Sets already. I won a set recently! Thank you!!

What a gorgeous way to start NSD. Your words were very touching, And inspiring. I have always been the family historian and a scrapbooker in one way or another. But what really threw me over the ledge was when I had my first son. I have always had problems with depression and the minute I got pregnant my hormones threw me into a tailspin. What was supposed to be the happiest time of my life was plagued by depression. I found a creative outlet in the pretty papers and gorgeous embellishments. Ultimately I realized as I worked my way out of depression through scrapbooking that it was more than “the stuff”. Scrapbooking about my baby and my new little family forced me to focus in on the priorities in my life and my blessings. Now I just had my second son and it has been a very difficult time. This time I didn’t get depression, I got a complicated pregnancy where my baby was at risk. Born at 27 weeks and only 1 lb 4 oz it has been a trying time. Lots of faith, and scrapbooking have helped me through again. He is doing great and I am proud to be part of the scrapbooking community. Thanks for your thoughtful post. Hope mine hasn’t been too long, but it really touched my heart. Happy NSD 2014! And thanks to Scrapbools and cards for always keeping our inspiration bubbling!!!

  123. Amber M. May 3, 2014 at 10:55 am

Happy NSD! I am very excited for a day of inspiration and creating! Today, I am finishing a scrapbook for my oldest daughter called “So far at 18” to commemorate her 18th birthday (yesterday). I have always been a “documentor”, largely because I lost both of my parents when I was in my teens and we were left with mostly our memories – very few photos (and next to none of those labeled with name, date, place) and memoribilia. I want my children and their children and their children’s children to know who we are/were and where they came from. I am passionate about scrapbooking for that very reason. Two of my sisters (and a third, who sadly passed away) also scrapbook, and I would bet their motivation is the same as mine. So needless to say, this generation will be very well documented 🙂

i scrapbook, because my family is huge, and i know we won’t be here forever, it is a gift i can leave to those who come after me. Once i had my children, 3 kids, and 2 have autism, it made me scrap even more, because for them, this will be their memories of us as a family when they are older. To me this is the best thing i can gift them. I like LF and Websters FB. Thanks

I especially love the die cut tools. They help show case my favorite family moments. Everyone wants to remember those close-knit family moments for years to come. They make good memories. So, I scrapbook them to add pleasure to our lives as well as give us a basis for telling our children’s children about the “good ‘ol days.” It brings families together and provides us with an unforgettable connection to the past! I want my grandchildren to say, “That’s what I want for my family too!”

  209. Amanda Franks May 3, 2014 at 1:56 pm

I scrapbook because I cannot remember any of the stories from my childhood… and no no else seems to remember either! I wanted to be able to tell my kids ‘Remember when…’ and for them to have the pictures and words to remember, even without me. My kids like that I scrapbook because it makes them feel special. Someone asks to take down ‘their’ book and look through it almost every time we end up spending a day at home. They love to show their siblings, and even though none of them remember the first 12 months of their lives (I am so behind!), it is obvious to them how much they are loved every time they look.

Wonderful heartwarming stories. Many reasons we get into scrapbooking, but at the bottom of it all is ‘love’. How wonderful to keep memories for the future of our families.

  232. Erin Glee May 3, 2014 at 4:02 pm

Sweet Art From the Heart story. I started Scrapbooking after my first baby was born…and my kids are still my biggest focus, but I too have creative things I made as a child and a photo album from when I was a ‘Tween and used the magnetic albums full of acid that they sold way back…(oops, dating myself!)…
I love Scrapbooking…and it is about the only thing I can think of that STAYS DONE! That page will still look like that next week. I don’t worry about being “caught up”. More pics and events always piling up, but unlike cooking, dishes and cleaning, what pages I do scrap stay done!

I am realizing that I have really missed the preserving of memories, and the satisfaction I feel when doing it. Thanks SCT!

These comments and art really do pull at our heart strings. My daughter is alway saying mom why do you spend SO much time on one page when you have so many pictures to scrap. I am about 8 years behind. I alway say to her that each page means so much to me I want it to be perfect and when you look at them years from now you will be able to see that I put my heart into each one.

  269. Donna Digby May 3, 2014 at 7:13 pm

Happy Scrappy Day! Wish I could come up with a layout like that. I don’t camp and I don’t eat sushi, but my family loves to and this prize would get a lot of use out of me.

    Happy NSD to everyone!
    I started to scrapbook
as my husband and I took
    up mountain biking and
    were in such lovely places,
that I had to take photos
and show how much fun we
    have and the beautiful
    places we go!

  276. Cammi Engelhard May 3, 2014 at 7:46 pm

I scrapbook my family history, and in one album I had wedding pictures of my husband’s grandparents. There was a picture, but no sense of who they were. So, my next project was OUR wedding album, for our three grandchildren, besides pictures it was full of funny stories, why we chose that date, how much things cost, etc. I want their grandchildren to know who we were! Thanks for letting me share!

  308. Leslie McGhee May 3, 2014 at 11:00 pm

I started scrapbooking to redo a scrapbook my dad made in 1964 when my younger brother died accidentally. He was eight at the time. Dad and Mom never really finished it and what they had done was all falling apart. It was a labour of love and they were sad but also very happy to see my finished album. My second album was my children’s Halloweens. Thanks for the prize.

  309. Tammy Sears May 3, 2014 at 11:08 pm

  310. Angie C. D. May 3, 2014 at 11:19 pm

I’ve been a forever scrapbooker too with the kraft paper scrapbooks bought with allowance or baby sitting money at woolworth filled with magazine clippings, photos, random journaling then magnetic albums that were more than picture albums to me because I always had to write the memory. When my boys were born scrapbooking with tons of stickers and theme paper was starting so I created. I’ve always been a crafter and wantabee artist but considered myself artsy so this was my creative outlet

  431. Lauren May 6, 2014 at 5:32 pm

I scrapbook because I love the stories too. I’m nowhere near the family historian (although I guess I kind of am emerging as one of several) but my primary focus is to share memories with my son of his hearing loss journey – what we did, how we felt, the difficulties and triumphs. Many of these things he doesn’t really remember but one day it will all be there for him to read and understand. I also love it because I am a very crafty person and unlike quilting, sewing, painting etc if you make a mistake – no biggy! There’s no mistakes in Papercraft, just reasons to add more embellies or techniques! Thanks for the chance to win a prize x

  432. Shona Chambers May 6, 2014 at 5:39 pm

  441. Danielle Ouellette May 6, 2014 at 8:21 pm

I super duper LOVE Lawn Fawn stamps! I literally just ordered myself two sets for Mother’s Day xD I know, I know. Aren’t you supposed to get the gifts, not pick them out? But my husband told me to just pick them out because there were so many sets I wanted! These were two I was weighing against but opted for Admit One (for my daughters’ joint birthday party this summer) and Science of Love (as I’m a bit of a nerd. Heehee)
I haven’t scrapbooked in forever, but sometimes it feels like my cards are mini scrapbooks since I use so many scraps & as many discarded bits & pieces as possible.

I started scrapbooking to rekindle my creative instincts and love of creating things after a long absence while I had young children. It’s turned into so much more than I could have expected – an outlet, a satisfaction, a comfort, a joy and best of all, a community, both near and far. I can’t thank SCT enough for being such an important part of it! Looking forward to many more NSDs and lots of creativity.

I moved from cards to scrapbooking when the local scrapbooking shop called for design team applications and I thought I’d give it a go. Actually accepted onto the team which blew me away. Now I’m well and truly hooked. Any spare time goes into my craft and the house remains a mess. But hey, we are all still hale
