“Happy InterNational Scrapbook Day everyone! To celebrate this fun day I scraplifted one of the beautiful layouts in the Spring issue of SCT. I absolutely loved Nathalie Desousa’s “Family Love” layout on page 67.

It was all the beautiful fussy-cut flowers that really caught my eye. Flowers? Count me in! Here is my take on her layout:

I used a mix of die-cut, epoxy and paper flowers.

I liked the look of the woodgrain patterned paper with its horizontal planks on Nathalie’s layout. I used that as a jumping off point and painted strips of colorful acrylic paint to act as a background for my photos.

Supplies: Cardstock: Bazzill Basics; Patterned paper, die-cut, epoxy flower stickers, epoxy dots: Doodlebug Designs; Word stickers: American Crafts; Acrylic paints: Vicki Boutin for American Crafts; Flowers: Prima; Adhesive: 3M; Other: faux rhinestone trim.

Hope you enjoy all the festivities here today!” ~ Stacy

Design Challenge!

In Stacy’s layout above she has essentially used the border strip as her focus point taking up one-third of her layout. This follows the “rule of thirds” design principle.

“The rule of thirds is applied by aligning a subject with the guide lines and their intersection points, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line, or allowing linear features in the image to flow from section to section.” (thank you Wikipedia!)

Stacy’s flower border flows into the photos which flows into her paint strips. Our challenge to you, should you choose to accept, is to create a layout following the “rule of thirds” principle. Remember it can be horizontal too!

Challenge Guidelines:

  1. Create a layout following the rule of thirds and send an image of it to us at ideas@scrapbookandcards.com.
  2. Please put “iNSD design challenge” in your reference line.
  3. Please ensure your image is less than 2mb.
  4. You have until May 13th to send your submission to us. We will share a selection of today’s challenge submissions on May 16th!

……………

Next, we have Design Team member Latisha Yoast joining us and you know what we love about this layout beyond her fabulous design? We love the Latisha is front and centre! Maybe that should be another challenge today…get yourself in a layout. It’s really ok to leave some memories about YOU too!

“Happy National Scrapbook Day friends!  I hope you are creating beautiful projects and preserving those precious memories!  Here is a layout of myself, doing something that I love. Which happens to be planning.  I probably have too many planners, but there is something very therapeutic with taking pen to paper and planning out a schedule.

For this layout, I used the Jen Hadfield Patio Party Collection from Pebbles. It has really vibrant summer prints, and then on the “b” sides, there are nice earthy prints, it’s a great combination.

As I was working on this layout, I initially was using a piece of a yellow beige card stock, then switched to white card stock.  It felt a little blah, with the white. Thats when I added the black spray ink, and water color to bring a little boldness to the page. I am a classic, clean and simple kind of gal, but adding a little bit of mixed media to the layout really took it to the next level.

Supplies: Pebbles Jen Hadfield Patio Party patterned paper, Thickers, Cardstock Stickers, Ephemera; Lawn Fawn black cord; WeR Memory Keepers Tag Punch Board; Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L

My advice today? Have fun and try new things!” ~ Latisha

Thank you Latisha! Finally this hour we have a cute craft from Design Team member Virginia Nebel!

“Happy interNational Scrapbook Day fellow crafters!  Welcome to our day-long blog celebration, we hope you are inspired this weekend to make a craft or two!

As memory keepers having a camera ready to capture that perfect moment is second nature to many of us.  Today I’m sharing a fun DIY craft using soda cans to make a camera! Google ‘DIY soda can camera’ and you can view many process videos on how to make this cool recycled craft.  I have shared a few assembly tips to create my version of this fun camera project.

I started with two large Arizona Green Tea cans (the beverage was quite refreshing too!), love the teal green and cherry blossoms pattern!  You will also need scissors and a hot glue gun. For straight clean edges, you can trim the tin with a guillotine trimmer.

Step 1. Take one can and cut around it 1.75 inches from the top to create the camera lens.  From the remaining lower part of the soda can, cut it out as a  rectangle piece measuring approx. 4.5″ x 9″ for the camera body

Step 2. Take the 2nd can and cut around it at the top and bottom to create one large rectangle piece.

Step 3. From the larger piece of tin, cut out a 3” x4.5” piece and use this as a connector for the piece in Step 1 to make the camera body.

Step 4. Place a piece of cardboard in the camera body so that it will keep it’s oval shape.

Step 5. Trace out the camera body onto card stock, cut well inside the template outline and adhere it onto the extra tin.  Cut darts all around the oval template and fold in the flaps. Adhere this to the camera body to finish the top.  Repeat for the camera bottom.

Step 6. Take the beverage can top from Step 1, trim it to the height you wish and glue it to the camera front. Fold a little rectangle from the scrap tin to create a flash.

Have fun with your fabulous camera as a fun photo prop or display.

Thanks for dropping by the blog and hope you have an amazing crafty day!” ~  Virginia
