Welcome to our first challenge post of International Scrapbook Day! We have five different challenges to share with you today—no stress, just fun! Each one is designed to inspire you to try a different technique or start with a new idea for your project. At 9am, we kicked off the event with a giveaway. In this hour, we are just getting you warmed up with a sketch! Sketches are a great way to start a layout when you don’t have a lot of time or are not coming up with a design idea. Let’s welcome Meghann Andrew and see how she used one of our Spring 2021 issue sketches to create with!

……………………..

Hello, friends! It’s Meghann here, and I am so excited to celebrate International Scrapbook Day with YOU! I’m coming here to provide your pregame workout—in the form of a sketch! Sketches provide quick and easy ideas for a layout design, and the fun part is interpreting it to fit your story and the products you have on hand! Today I worked with this beautiful PageMaps sketch from the Spring 2021 issue:

I started with my photos, and I had three to use on this single 12” x 12” page, all portrait in orientation. The sketch was clearly designed for landscape photos, but I knew there was a solution: flip the sketch! I flipped this sketch by 90 degrees clockwise, and the ideas just began to flow! Take a look at the page I created, starting with the beautiful Daisy Meadows collection from Close to My Heart:

Supplies | Patterned paper, stickers, enamel dots: Close to My Heart Daisy Meadows collection, Mix-In paper packet; Elle’s Studio: April 2021 kit, Adventure label puffy stickers, Jane tile alphabet stickers – teal, typewriter cardstock alphabet stickers – white, Mini Dated stamp; Other: sewing machine, white thread, Rough Typewriter font

To start, I kept to the exact placement of the paper blocks in the sketch. I loved the wide, contrasting border around the page. It immediately created such a striking design when topped with the Daisy Meadows and Mix-In patterns. My photos, recording my son’s first time on a swing, took up more room across the width of the page, given that there were three. Instead of trying to fit the circular element, which originally showed a journaling spot, to the left of the photos, I opted to move it down to the bottom left corner of the photo block, and use that space for my title!

The wreath sticker from the Daisy Meadows sticker sheet created the perfect frame for my title, which I stamped using the Daisy Meadows scrapbooking stamp, which I paired with the typewriter alphabet stickers from Elle’s Studio. I just love mixing and matching fonts in my title. For another interesting element within the circle, I added the puffy phrase sticker, too.

Pocket cards make perfect journaling spots on layouts, too, and I added this 3” x 4” one from Elle’s Studio below my photos, where the title was placed in the sketch. To mimic the sketch, I cut a banner edge at the base. I love the way that the yellow stripes play against the other patterns below this card.

This sketch featured a lot of flowers, so I grabbed the Daisy Meadows sticker sheet and started tucking flowers and other botanicals around my title and photos. I also added in different textures with more puffy stickers and enamel dots, as well as subtle machine stitching around the page.

I could not resist this little bunny with his bowtie—perfect for this page about a sweet “first” moment for my son!

This page came together in no time, thanks to this well-designed PageMaps sketch. When you pair a special story, cherished photos and beautiful products with a sketch, magical things happen! I hope you have fun creating with a sketch today, too!
