Are you ready for our second round of inspiration? We have Victoria Calvin here for our twelve o’clock hour, and she’s been inspired by one of our favorite columns in the magazine: Design 101! Let’s find out how Victoria used the information found in the column to create a new layout and be sure to take up the challenge at the bottom of the post!

Hello friends! Happy International Scrapbook Day! It’s Victoria and I am back with a fun challenge! I hope you are able to take advantage of this fun weekend by spending time in your scrappy space and making stunning layouts.  Today’s project is inspired by the Scrapbook & Cards Today Design 101 column, featured on page 37 of the Spring 2021 issue. In this column SCT team member Natalie Desousa shares several scrapbook design techniques to include incorporating texture on a scrapbook layout and offsetting your photos to allow more movement on a scrapbook page. Based on Natalie’s tips, I created a layout that features an offset asymmetrical design using the Garden Party Collection by Maggie Holmes and American Crafts.

Supplies | Garden Party Collection by American Crafts & Maggie Holmes: 12×12 Paper Pad, Thickers, Resin Stickers – Gold Accent, Ephemera – Vellum and Gold Foil Accents, Sticker Book, 12 x 12 Chipboard Sticker Sheet, Puffy Stickers, 6 x 12 Sticker Sheet

At first glance, an asymmetrical design may appear to be off-balance. However, just like a symmetrical design where all of the elements are balanced in terms of scale and size, an asymmetrical design seeks to create balance through the positioning of a large element opposite that of a smaller element. Let’s take a closer look at asymmetry in action!

To begin, using patterned paper from the Garden Party Collection, I created an 8.5 x 11 inch background. Next, I adhered a strip of floral patterned paper to the top of the layout, creating an anchor for my photo and embellishment clusters.  I positioned a 4 x 6-inch photo to the right side of the layout. This provided space on the left side of the layout for a cluster of embellishments. Next, to the left and bottom right of the photo, I layered die cuts, puffy stickers, chipboard stickers, and gold glitter resin hearts from the Garden Party Collection. As you can see, the patterned paper and embellishments work together to create a ton of visual weight.

Next, I created a layered cluster of embellishments at the bottom left of the layout, repeating the elements that were used to create the clusters at the top of the layout. The bottom cluster helps to support all of the visual weight that is presented at the top of the layout, and works to balance the overall visual impact of this layout, thus creating an asymmetrical design!

To complete this project, I created a title using the puffy sticker “Love This” from the Garden Party Puffy Sticker Sheet, along with the Garden Party Puffy Thickers. Lastly, I added a journaling block printed on the vellum underneath the title.  And with that, this asymmetrical layout is done!
