We are so excited to welcome a pocket-page scrapbooker to the SCT blog today! Elizabeth Heinz has a clean, graphic, photo-based design aesthetic in her pockets that we just love, and every time we see her projects, we just want to pick her creative brain about how she created them! Well, today, we get a bit of insight into Elizabeth’s design decisions, as she shares her latest pocket page projects with us, and encourages us to switch up our pocket formats to record different stories throughout our month!

Hello SCT friends!  It’s Elizabeth Heinz, and I’m delighted to share my May 2020 Project Life pages with you. I transitioned to monthly instead of weekly documentation this year. I love this change—it allows me to add inserts for my creative team assignments, longer stories OR special events, and today I’m here to share how I mix and match these different formats together in my album!

Supplies:  Ali Edwards: 9X12 Black Pleather Album; 9×12″ Page Protectors – 3B ; 6×12” Page Protectors – AIndex Tabs with Inserts; Tough 4×6 Stamp Set; Stories by the Month Digital: May 2020; Stories by the Month Kit: May 2020; Stories by the Month Kit: May 2019; Week in the Life 2020 Asterisk Chipboard Sheet. Whimsy Fox Crafts: 10 Stitched Tabs – Rainbow Thread. Amazon: Becky Higgins 8.5×11 Page Protectors – Vertical.

I began this month with an 8.5” x 11” insert for my creative team assignment using the Ali Edwards May Digital Stories by the Month Kit. I paired a simple grid with a horizontal photo strip.

For the front of this insert, I enlarged a photo of one of our beautiful neighborhood flowering trees.

Next, I included a 6” x 12” insert to highlight a special event: my son’s drive-through senior checkout from high school. When I add multiple inserts, I mix-up the sizes for variety and interest. On the front, I combined two 4” x 6” photos, a 3” x 4” photo and a 3” x 4” journaling card. On the back, I combined a 4” x 6” journaling card and a 6” x 8” photo.

Finally, I created my “book-ends” using 9” x 12” page protectors. I always start with photos when designing a page. On most pages, I include three 4” x 6” photos and one 4” x 6” title card. This month, I included a photo strip AND a flip-up in my 4” x 6” pockets to allow for more photos. Next, I filled my 3” x 4” pockets with a combination of photos and journaling cards.

My last step was to embellish.  When I do multiple pages, I find something to repeat to provide consistency among the pages. This month, I combined a word phrase sticker with a chipboard asterisk.

Thank you for joining me today! I hope you found some inspiration to use in your projects. If you haven’t tried adding different-sized inserts into a monthly pocket page spread or you have not repeated an embellishment throughout your pages, I encourage you to play. Happy crafting!

XO, Elizabeth

My name is Elizabeth and I reside in Peoria, Arizona. I’m married and happily raising two boys, Bailey (20) and Joshua (18). I also have an affectionate Boston Terrier, Bond. I work part-time at Midwestern University as a Standardized Patient—pretending to be a patient for students going through their clinical rotations. When I’m not crafting, I enjoy hiking, reading and gardening. I’m passionate about writing my story. It’s not remarkable, but it’s MINE.
