Monday with Megan: Talking the Trend of Toppings

Monday with Megan: Talking the Trend of Toppings

I spent the weekend teaching scrapbooking classes in Portland, OR., where one of my extremely kind and  creative students, Molly James, shared this tidbit with me: the Dollar Tree carries little micro beads, confetti, glitter, etc. in bitty glass jars!

Aren’t these bitty bottles cute?

They’re meant for use in nail art, which is its own HUGE trend right now, but they’re absolutely scrapbook/card friendly. And they’re 8 bottles for only $1! Yes!

We do love our toppings don’t we? From adding colorful baubles to our baking to placing spots of personality on our walls. And the world of paper toppings has seen a big boom in the last couple of years, with sequins, shaped enamel stickers, resin molds, and more. Let’s take a look at this colorful trend!

Home Toppings

Yes, wall toppings are here in a big way. Here are just a couple of the awesome accents available at the moment:

Geometric Triangle and Modern Wall Stencils by Cute Stencils

Wall stencils are so fun! I just bought my first two sets from Hello There Store and can’t wait to put them to use. They’re such a fun way to add a splash of topping to the home.

Have you seen these metallic marks? They’re vinyl stickers you simply peel and stick to your wall for a quick sprinkle of shine.

Paper Toppings

Time to sprinkle on some personality using any of these fine paper-crafting products:

Sprinkle Nail Decorations by Avon

Thanks to my former student and new friend, an entire world of crafting opportunity has opened up to me with it comes tiny toppings. These bitty beads are from Avon and would look awesome attached to the top of brads, adhered to foam shapes (like my arrow from last week), and more! What would you do with them?

Tiny Bows on eBay

Aren’t these itsy items the sweetest? They’re on eBay, so you had better get your bidding business ready.

Enamel Shapes

These smooth operators are here in a big way. Gone are the days of simple using round rhinestones and enamel stickers. Now you can add hearts, arrows, numbers and more!

Pom Poms

I know, I know, we’ve already covered the popularity of poms on one of our recent Monday with Megan posts, but I just couldn’t resist including this to-die-for topping option now available to you! You’re welcome! 😉

Even fine felt cuties are appearing on the scene these days. I want that pink pom sitting atop a cupcake on my next birthday card!

Since we’ve already covered the successful sequin trend, I won’t go into great deal here either, but I did want to show you one of my current projects in process using this sparkling topping—my Easter Egg Garland!

Find complete instructions for making your own sequin-filled eggs over on my blog.

Well, I hope I’ve topped off your creativity today. Thanks for sprinkling the comments with your ideas and favorite sprinkle options. Hearing from you is like the icing on this cake!

What type of adhesive works best with the Mini Bottles of Toppings? How ever would they adhere, and then eventually, remove the Toppings off of your nails? Please be careful on how you store, and secure, these Toppings. You don’t want your young children or grandchildren, nor your animals, to get into this! Also, if you are making cards, and donating them, please make certain that they allow Toppings. Some accepting Organizations, Operation Write Home is a perfect example, cannot accept cards with these Toppings because it endangers our Troops by giving away our Troops locations to our enemies. All that glitters can be very dangerous! Finally, our U.S. Postal Service kindly asks that you completely glue down these Toppings flatly, and completely secure your mailing envelope, because these Toppings can get caught in their Automated Machinery and stop our mail from being Franked properly. Yikes! I have seen this and it isn’t pretty!!

I’m not into nail art, but companies are sure making it easier to apply these little goodies to my craft projects. My favorites are the enamel shapes – pretty flat for mailing, and they come in all shapes and sizes now too.

Super fun! One of the things I love is when embellishments like this come in small quantities so that in 10 years I won’t still have a bottle of those balls (and be sick of them!) I’ll need to make a trip to the Dollar Tree and see what they have (mine is next to a Hobby Lobby, so I will have a very nice crafty field trip!)
Thanks so much for sharing and inspiring!

These trendy little toppers are ever so tempting!!!
Sadly we don’t have Dollar Tree, Hobby Lobby etc here in Australia, but now I know to look out crafty toppers in more than my usual stores. The good news is that what goes around comes around and I’m sure I have some shaped stickers from a gazillion years ago when I 1st started scrapping … now the challenge is to find them!!!
Thank you for the sharing Megan 🙂

Great idea! Will probably check some of the stickers I have ready for donation and adapt something before heading out to shop. Cheers!
