Awe, KP. This girl rocks trends, style and a natural cool. Though, her sweet demeanor and kind heart prove she doesn’t let this way of life go to her head. Kelly Purkey is a talented scrapbooker, product designer, teacher, and all-around creative. And she’s agreed to take time out of her crazy-busy life to chat with us today! Woot! So, without further ado…
Meet the adorable Kelly Purkey!
Megan: From your trend-savvy vantage point, what would you say is the next big thing we can look forward to in the world of paper crafting? And what is it about this that has you believing it’s the next big deal?
Trend Friend: I think smaller will be bigger! I love that We R Memory Keepers came out with a 4×4 album and I think we'll see more products start to come out on a smaller scale. It'll make them perfect for using in those Project Life pockets and making mini books or cards. People don't seem to be scrapbooking as many layouts anymore, so catering to these other outlets with smaller sized stickers, embellishments, and stamps.
Megan: Of the many amazing trends on the scene at the moment, what is your current fav when it comes to the world of crafting? Why?
Trend Friend: I love all the handwritten lettering that's happening right now. The calligraphy, brush work, and simple pen hand lettering just blows me away. I like that it's such a beautiful art form that is done by someone's talented hand without any digital tools. It's fun to see handwritten lettering on papers, as stamps, and all over embellishments. Love this new line from Crate Paper!
Megan: How would you feel about letting us in on one of your secret sources for trend research? We’d love it if you’d list a favorite website or two that is off the beaten path when it comes to spotting the up-and-coming cool.
Trend Friend: One of my favorite resources for staying up on trends is actually audible rather than visual. Every week I listen to Grace Bonney from Design*Sponge on her podcast called After the Jump. She tackles a different creative topic each week and talks about a lot of trends happening all over in the design world with different guests. I really love hearing what some of the business owners, designers, and people behind brands that I love share their input on design and where it's going.
Megan: As you find yourself inspired by trends, how do you translate that inspiration into projects? For example, do you have a notebook where you keep your trendy tidbits contained to pull from as you’re crafting?
Trend Friend: I keep a lot of inspiration on my Pinterest boards and have private ones that I pin a lot of things to for product design inspiration. I also always have some kind of journal with me to jot down ideas. In my bag I like to carry a journal, pen, and a roll of washi tape to adhere papers I rip out of magazines or come across.
Megan: KP, it seems you always have something fun in the works. Would you mind sharing a look at a current project you have in the works?
Trend Friend: I have a brand-new line in collaboration with BasicGrey called Second City. It's inspired by one of my hometowns, Chicago, and it's a fun line to use for every day documenting or to record your travels. When putting together product lines, I like to keep the color palette and products fairly gender neutral so it can be one of those lines you go to if you're scrapbooking boy themed pages or don't want to get too girlie. I hope that everyone likes it and can't wait to see people begin to use it!
Megan: How can our SCT Trend Friends learn more about you and your style?
Trend Friend: Thank you so much for the chance to share my thoughts. I'm excited to see where the industry is going and what new + exciting things are around the corner!
It’s an absolute joy to be talking trends with you today, Kelly. Thank you for visiting and sharing the view from your fresh and fun vantage point!
