My name is Erica and I’m so excited to be a guest designer for Scrapbook & Cards Today Magazine during this Spring Issue Challenge Week! I have been a card maker for many, many years now and I absolutely love it. It’s saved my sanity many times, during sickness, chronic pain issues, moving a lot due to my husband’s job, grief, and a pandemic! Today’s challenge involves a beautiful mood board to inspire us. Take a look:

For my card today, I wanted to use the Sunflower washi suite from Pinkfresh Studio. This set is not only fabulous but, for March, 100% of the net profits from this will go to Save The Children Organization, one of the charities helping children affected by the war in Ukraine. Here’s how I used these beautiful products and the mood board:

Supplies | Pinkfresh Studio: Sunflowers Washi, Sunflowers Washi die, Sunflowers Washi stamp, Sunflowers Washi layering stencil, Essentials: Jewels MixEssentials: Nested-Chevron Die, Sentiment suite: You die set, Simply Sentiments – You stamp set, Ink: Ocean Breeze, Mermaid Cove, Sunshine, Coral Reef, Sparkling Rose; Cardstock: Neenah

I decided to use the Sunflowers washi tape, and after adhering this to Neenah #110 Solar White cardstock, I also ran a mixed media scraper over it to make sure it was flat. After cutting out the flowers with the Sunflowers Washi die, I started to work on my background.

In the mood board image, there is a gorgeous knitted sweater with a chevron pattern, in lovely colours. I tried colour-matching that sweater to inks, also from Pinkfresh, and settled on Ocean Breeze, Mermaid Cove, Sunshine, Coral Reef, and Sparkling Rose.

The chevron pattern itself was easy to achieve using the Essentials Nested Chevron cover plate, also from Pinkfresh. I used the cover plate on two different pieces of cardstock. On a card panel, I glued down the negative pieces, and on another card panel, the positive ones. Over these, I ink blended the inks mentioned above, and the reason for ink blending after die-cutting and not before is to add extra colour to edges, making the pattern pop a bit more.

When I was happy with the colour added, I simply glued in the pieces to make a whole background again. I ended up with two lovely backgrounds but chose the one with more colour on it for my card.

After trimming down the background, I adhered the chevron front to a card base which added that lovely white border. On top of this, I adhered to the Sunflower washi die cuts and finished it off with a die cut ‘you’ and a stamped sentiment to say ‘you make me try better,’ which I am now thinking doesn’t make sense, but I am a foreigner so I will claim language barrier!

I am also a self-confessed over-sequinizer, so I couldn’t not use some lovely jewels from Pinkfresh. These are colour coordinated to the area where they are added.

Using a cover plate to add texture and help you divide up colour areas is a great way to stretch your supplies! Washi tapes are also a fab addition to your craft room, especially if you like the look of water colouring but don’t have the time or the patience to practice. With that, the card is done and I hope you like it! Thank you so much for stopping by today, and thank you to SCT Magazine for inviting me. Lots of love and happy crafting!

Hi there! I’m Erica, and I’m a self-confessed craft-a-holic. I’ve always been creative in one way or another, for as long as I can remember. Sewing, woodworking, metalworking, painting, stitching, embroidery, etc. The list goes on. My biggest love, however, is card making, and it has been for years now. I started with a Christmas card kit some 13+ years ago and it was a slippery slope from there on! I love colouring and seeing projects come to life in front of me, it speaks to my soul on a deep level. If I didn’t have a crafty outlet, I’m 100% sure I’d go nuts. Or nuttier as some people would say…

You can find me mostly on Instagram, that’s where I’m the most active for sure. That’s also where I have made so many amazing friends, from all around the world, most of who I would never have met otherwise.

Among those friends are Tasha, Jo, and Verity. With the recent crisis in Ukraine, we put our heads together to do something positive in a terrible situation. We decided to hold a card auction and asked some friends to join in, who also asked some friends, and so on. All of a sudden we had over 200 cards to auction off! The response has been so fantastic and overwhelming, it’s just mind-blowing! So far we have raised over nine thousand dollars for various charities working in Ukraine and on their borders. “You make me try better” makes total sense. I love it. It reminds me of the movie with Jack Nicholson called As Good As it Gets where he uses a phrase , “You make me want to be a better man. “
Love your card!!
