Hello SCT friends! It’s Erica here with you today sharing two projects using the Storyteller collection from Vicki Boutin! Today is “Teach Me Tuesday,” and I want to share how you can create dimensional embellishments for your projects!
Supplies | Cardstock: American Crafts; Patterned paper, specialty paper: Vicki Boutin Storyteller; Adhesive: Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L, Therm-O-Web; Sewing machine: Brother
The Storyteller collection from Vicki Boutin has some great patterned papers that are perfect for fussy cutting and layering! I pulled out the beautiful Mariposa 12” x 12” paper and fussy cut the whole page. If there is a page you struggle with, try, and think of a different way you can use it. Fussy cutting images to create layered embellishments is one way to get a lot of use out of a paper like this.
Once all my butterflies were cut, I started to layer them up. Some of the butterflies I matched up the same size and color. I also mixed it up a little by adding different sized butterflies together for even more interest. There are a few ways you can adhere these pieces together and I decided to run them through my sewing machine to add some texture. If you do not have a sewing machine you could hand stitch them or just use some adhesive. A nice strong wet adhesive that dries quickly would work very well but you could also use some glue dots!
You could do this technique with many other different images and shapes. This is one technique that could be done over and over again on your projects. Taking it a step further, you could layer the butterflies onto some of the pretty Storyteller vellum with gold accents to create even more layers! I decided to take one of my butterfly layers and create a clean and simple card after I completed my layout!
To see how I created my layout today please check out this process video:
I had so much fun creating these layered butterflies with the Mariposa patterned paper from Storyteller. I would love to see you give this simple technique a try on one of your upcoming projects! Tag us and use the hashtag #sctmagazine on social media so we can see what you create!
