Hello, friends! It’s Justin here, and today I am leaning into those chilly winter vibes that make your home cozy for the holidays! One rule I try to stick to when crafting is to think of those small details that can add a big punch to your project. Today, that small detail we will be focusing on is foiling! While today’s card features just one small bit of foiling, it gives the recipient that “how did they do that?” feel upon opening!

I just adore large die cut sets like this Home Sweet Home set by Pink & Main. The base set provides you with all of the pieces that you need to put a sweet little house together. In addition, there are also add-on sets, such as the Winter version that I used for this card, to make your card perfect for various times of the year.

This die set does have a lot of smaller pieces to it, so it’s best to work with a method to keep your space nice and organized. For me, I die cut each color, one at a time, and then organized my dies by color as best as I could in Stack-n-Sort Trays by Scrapbook.com. Now, I didn’t have a designated tray per color in the end, but I was able to gather all of my die cuts from the same paper colors in little groups within the trays that I was using! This way, I knew that as I was working with my die cuts, I was keeping tabs on all of my little pieces so they didn’t go missing!

Now, let’s talk about the most daunting part of this card: the foiled sentiment. I know that adding a foiled element to your card seems like it is going to be an extremely difficult task, but with the right tools in hand, it’s incredibly easy! The key elements you are going to need to foil as I do in this card are:

1. A foiling machine, such as the Mini Minc by Pink & Main
2. A foiling pocket (included with the Mini Minc)
3. Toner foil
4. Toner reactive sheets or cut-ups
5. A clean-up brush

Here are a couple of tips to make your foiling super easy!

When I foil with my Mini Minc machine, I always have the heat set to Level 3. I have found this works perfectly! The Mini Minc machines warm up quickly (usually less than 5 minutes). I have found that they typically do not need to be pre-heated for long, and are ready to use soon after you get that final “beep” that indicates you’ve reached your desired heat setting! Now, if you are using a laminator, I do typically recommend letting the unit run for a good 10-15 minutes after achieving the set heat level so that you can ensure it’s properly warmed.

A good rule of thumb is to remember that you want the dull and silver side of your toner foil to touch the toner printed design surface for whatever toner element you are using. If you have the pretty part of your foil touching, you won’t get a transfer.

Cut your Toner Foil to size, and don’t use excessive amounts when foiling. If the piece of foil is too large, it makes it more likely that you will cause wrinkles while foiling, which can lead to imperfections.

Lastly, use a big brush, such as the Clean Up Brush by Pink & Main, to help dust off the back of your Toner Foil and the front of your Toner Reactive Sheet or Cut-Ups! This helps make sure that no little dust or debris will cause imperfections while foiling!
