We are so excited to say hello to the first member of our leadership team here at SCT: our Editor-in-Chief, Susan R. Opel!

Let’s find out a bit more about Susan today!

Where have you been finding inspiration lately, Susan?

I subscribe to Vogue magazine, and I appreciate not only the fashion but the gorgeous photography. Each page is a dreamy and artistic fantasy.  I tend to devour fashion inspiration and love watching Project Runway and Making the Cut. In addition, I pay close attention to fashion on red carpets of various awards shows, and style icons like Gwen Stefani and John Legend on The Voice! Fashioninspired cards are my JAM.

If you had one piece of advice for a new paper crafter, what would it be?

You don’t need all the things. You can make awesome stuff without going into debt. Take some classes and figure out what you like and dive into it. Watch videos, follow paper crafters on Instagram, and emulate what speaks to you. And don’t forget to thank the creators who inspire you!

What is your favorite design tip?

The rule of thirds just never lets me down! When I’m arranging pieces on a card front and things aren’t feeling “right,” positioning everything to hit the sweet spots in the intersecting thirds is typically the right answer. A less technical tip? Use your ribbon stash and tie on a bow. It makes your card feel like a gift!

If you have a free hour in your day, how would you spend it?

Get in my car and drive! I just bought four new tires for my Buick Encore (*crying wallet*), so I’m in the mood to explore. And driving soothes me.

What are you most excited about in your craft for 2024?

I’ve concocted a plan for sending cards to friends and family all through the year. I make a zillion cards, and I want to share them with those who mean the most to me!

We love that Susan is leading the team to bring you two new issues of Scrapbook & Cards Today in 2024! But, don’t miss what she is creating outside of the magazine, too! Take a look at three of her favourite projects from the past year:
