We are so excited to kick off Mixed Media week today! This week is dedicated to inspiration in all forms of mixed media, featuring projects from our team and special guests! Let’s start the week out with our Editor In Chief, Susan R. Opel, who is challenging us to use a staple tool that we all probably have in our stash: a stencil!

………………………….

Welcome to Mixed Media week!

It’s time to stretch yourself and switch things up in your crafting!

Once upon a time I uttered the following things:

  1. Why would I want to make a card?
  2. I will never stamp.
  3. OK, I will stamp, but I will never color.

What a transformation! I’ve been trying new things, and I love it. Many moons ago I attended a Heidi Swapp class, and she told us that we should always take time to play—not finish a project, but rather enjoy the process. That has always resonated with me, and this week we hope that you can heed this wise advice!

Stenciling used to intimidate me, but now I can’t get enough! For this card, I layered a vintage script stamp, and then I ink blended the leaves stencil with the newest Tim Holtz Distress color—Villainous Potion.

Once I pulled back the stencil, I blended lightly over the leaves for an intense purple panel. It was hard to find cardstock to match, so I chose pristine white with touches of gold sparkle and metallic. It’s rare for me to use white, but I’m so pleased with how it turned out! What’s not rare are touches of sparkle or metallic in my designs. It’s a thing!

I have a special place in my heart for Mexico, so I wanted to make a Christmas card reading Feliz Navidad. Since I don’t have a stamp set with this sentiment, I decided to pull out the Tim Holtz Varsity dies for a custom sentiment.

Since the dies were rather large, I settled on a slimline design, and I cut the letters from 100% wool felt and green glitter paper. I LOVE using felt, and I sometimes forget about it. One fun tip when cutting felt: it works best to put copy paper between the felt and the cutting plate. I don’t know why that helps, but believe me, it does!

We are so thankful for you! Have a wonderful week, friends, and be sure to stop by each day for more mixed media inspiration!
