SCT Magazine - Photography 101 Class

Hello, friends! It’s Meghann Andrew with you today, to give you a quick update on one of our 2023 classes, Photography 101! We are halfway through the class, and have already learned so much from instructor Lisa Varshine! Today I want to give you a peek into the class, talk about what we’ve been learning, and let you know that you can still join in to deepen the stories that you tell through your lens. What do I mean by that? Let’s go through what we have covered so far!

SCT Magazine - Photography 101 - Lesson One

Lesson 01

Lesson one was all about getting to know your camera, whether you use a smartphone or a DSLR. Lisa taught us the basics of exposure and gave great tips on how to get the best images from your phone—and with these tips, our shots already began improving!

Lesson 02

Lesson two challenged us to find our photography voice–our photography style. To do this, we had to ask ourselves, “What makes a photo beautiful?” and that answer is different for each of us. We also learned Lisa’s tips on taking authentic photographs that capture the feeling and mood of the moment that we are capturing.

Lesson 03

Lesson three may just be our most important lesson yet, on composition. This lesson included SO much information about how to create a beautiful photo by setting up the shot based on the elements of composition. Lisa included so many beautiful and inspiring examples in this lesson to explain each aspect of composition that we discussed that it was easy to try them out for this month’s assignment. This was a lesson not to miss!

Lesson 04

Lesson four was all about editing our photos, and included many examples of different ways that we can do that—from programs to apps so that we can accurately capture with the image what we are seeing in real life. In this lesson, Lisa showed us a few of her edits in real-time on her monthly video, and gave before and after images, like the one above to illustrate how each adjustment affects the shot.

Lesson 05

Last week, our latest lesson was released, and Lisa discussed capturing real-life, everyday moments through the lens. Instead of capturing only the big moments, like birthdays, holidays, or posed shots, we want to record the messy, everyday life moments that tell the real stories of our lives. Lisa gave great tips on how to capture these special moments with our camera and challenged us to document an entire day of our lives with our camera!

What an awesome amount of content we have already received in this class—five full-colour class handouts with over 35 pages of content, as well as five private class videos from Lisa which reinforce each lesson with her amazing photo examples!
