Hello there, SCT friends! It’s Meghann Andrew and I’m SO excited to be here on the blog with you today for the 12 Days of Holiday Giving event! Today I’m encouraging you to think outside of the red and green gift box and create in COLOUR this season!

This fun, clean & graphic set was designed by our own Cathy Zielske, and offers up a load of creative possibilities! I was inspired by a rainbow of bottle-brush trees that I have in my studio to make a rainbow card using the five trees image.

Want to know the easiest (and most fun, in my opinion!) way of colouring a fine-line stamped image like this? Watercolor! Don’t have a watercolor tray? No worries! Simply use your dye-based ink pads and a mess-free water brushes, like the ones we carry in the SCT shop! I tapped my Honeysuckle, Grapefruit, Buttercup, Parsley, and Oceanside inks onto an acrylic block and used that as my palette, carrying the ink from the left to right, so that the left side of each tree was more saturated. With this look, it’s even okay to colour outside of the lines a bit! Watercoloring is so relaxing—I highly recommend this technique for holiday crafting to de-stress!

Once my trees were coloured and dried, I cut them out using the coordinating metal die, making it SO easy! I wanted the colourful trees to be the focal point, so I left my layers neutral, layering the trees on an embossed white cardstock piece which I layered on my A2-sized card front. I wanted an equally colourful sentiment, so I inked it up using the same colours that I used on my trees, just tapping along the sentiment until I achieved a nice rainbow before stamping. I then cut this out with a banner metal die and added it to my card front with dimensional adhesive. A few sequins added some sparkle!

For my second card, I focused on one tree. This time, I went for a classic green, combining Sprout, Parsley, and Evergreen on the tree, using the same watercolour technique as before. I just love the ombre effect I achieved! I let the tree dry while I cut strips of Honeysuckle, Grapefruit, Buttercup, Parsley, and Oceanside cardstock in 1/2-inch increments, which I adhered to a piece of white cardstock sized at 4 x 5-1/8″. I layered this piece up using dimensional adhesive on the A2-sized card front.

The next step was so much fun! I adhered my tree to the center of my colourful strips of paper using foam adhesive from Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L, then grabbed my Concord & 9th enamel dots that coordinated with the paper strips. I adorned my tree with the smallest dots on each ornament, and added in a few rhinestones for sparkle, too! I wanted my sentiment to be neutral this time, so I stamped it in black and again cut it out with a banner metal die to give it a nice clean touch. I had no idea I would love this card as much as I did once I was finished.

I hope these colourful designs inspire you to put your red and green aside and pull out a rainbow of inks for one project this season and to try your hand at water colouring using your dye-based ink pads! Don’t miss the beautiful Peace Love Joy stamp and die in the shop, too! I can’t wait to use it to create more holiday projects!
