Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, SCT friends! If you are celebrating along with us, we hope that you have a wonderful day filled by creating memories with your friends and family, and possibly eating a slice of pie, or two!

For those of you outside of Canada and not celebrating today, you may be getting prepared for another upcoming holiday: Halloween! We’re excited to share today’s free cut file from our own Creative Director, Paige Evans, as well as inspiration from Wendy Sue Anderson. We hope that you’ll create with it and share it with us on social media by tagging @sctmagazine!

Hello, SCT Friends! It’s Wendy Sue here today, sharing a not-so-wicked layout I created with the fun new October cut file designed by Paige Evans!

Here’s a look at the layout I created using the cut file:

Supplies | Spooky by Echo Park Paper: Patterned paper, ephemera, stickers; Carta Bella Paper: white Cardstock, black Cardstock, vellum; Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L: foam adhesive; Electronic die cut machine: Silhouette; May Arts: ribbon; Other: sewing machine; white thread; white paint

I’ve admired Paige’s cut files for a while now, but this was my first time using one; and I can say for sure that it won’t be my last! I had so much fun and I love the results. Here are a few ideas for using this cut file.

First, I actually cut the file twice: once from black cardstock and once from white cardstock. I glued the two pieces together, slightly offset to create a shadow effect.

I also cut the outside edges of the file to create a large vellum piece which I glued to the back side of the title piece. I liked the “foggy” effect it created to go along with the spooky theme. You can see that, in addition to muting the background paper behind the title, this technique allows for some ghostly little friends to peek around the letters without being too distracting.

Finally, I cut the letters from several different patterned papers, mixing and matching from Echo Park’s “Spooky” collection to create a unique and eclectic look.

I had fun embellishing the title piece, along with the rest of the layout, with stickers and ephemera pieces from the “Spooky” collection as well.

I hope you’re inspired to whip up a little magic with this new “Hocus Pocus” cut file on your next Halloween project! Don’t forget you can adjust the size to use on a smaller page, in a mini album for your October Daily project, or even on a card! Happy Halloween!
